Overview

A homeowner in the Fernwood neighbourhood contacted Advantage Tree Care after noticing signs of decay and fungal growth on a mature Garry oak in their backyard. The tree was a centerpiece of their property, but its health appeared to be declining, and the client was concerned about the potential risks.

Challenges

The Garry oak showed visible signs of rot near the base and fungal fruiting bodies on several branches, indicating an advanced infection. The challenge was to accurately diagnose the extent of the decay and determine whether the tree could be saved or if removal was necessary. Additionally, the tree was located near the property line, requiring careful consideration of neighbouring properties during treatment.

The Solution

Our ISA-certified arborists conducted a comprehensive tree health assessment, including a Level 3 risk assessment that involved core sampling and resistograph testing to measure the extent of internal decay. We identified the presence of Ganoderma, a type of wood-decaying fungus known to cause root and butt rot in oak trees. The tree had a significant amount of decay, but with intervention, it was deemed possible to extend its lifespan.

We performed selective pruning to remove the infected branches and reduce the overall weight on the compromised areas. Additionally, we recommended soil treatments to improve the tree’s root zone, including the application of a mycorrhizal inoculant to enhance root health and bolster the tree’s natural defenses. We also implemented a monitoring plan to regularly check the tree’s condition and manage the fungal infection.

Outcome

The client was relieved to learn that their Garry oak could be preserved with ongoing care. The tree’s health has stabilized, and the risk of sudden limb failure has been significantly reduced. The homeowner appreciated our proactive approach, which not only addressed the immediate fungal issue but also put a long-term health plan in place. The tree remains a cherished feature of their property, with its future now secured through careful monitoring and maintenance
